She was only the second woman ever to receive a U.S. patent. However Luther Childs Crowell (who had been fascinated by paper since he was a child) actually filed a patent for the bags themselves though he credits Knight with the invention. And finally there is Francis Wolle who patented the machine to make the bags, and the company he started with his brother in 1869 became extremely profitable and is still around today!
